Tales by the Fire is a collection of encounters that can be used during travel in your Shadowdark campaign. These encounters are meant to be little to no prep, making for an easy gap filler. They have been left vague for you to flex your creative muscles to fill in the gaps when needed. Here is a brief description of what is in the book:

By the Firelight
A table of six random events that can happen while someone is keeping watch. Easy to run and has some flavor to it.


Roadside Encounter.
Six planned out traveling encounters, varying from just something odd happens to interactions with NPCs. These are meant to be short and sweet, giving the players a more lived in feeling when it comes to the outside world. Each encounter with an NPC has a break down of the NPCs look, personality and goals. Along with descriptions of the buildings or area used in the encounter.

Roadside Healer.
A priest of Shune the Vile has set up a tent by the roadside, offering help to anyone in need. Inside screams can be heard, leaving passerby's to wonder if someone is being harmed or helped.

Grandma’s House.
An old woman lives in the woods in her small cottage. She likes to be called “Grandma” because of a family of ghouls she keeps fed in her basement. Using baked good to poison travelers.

The Shepherd's Hut.
A small hut, surrounded by a few sheep and goats, houses an older gentleman who lives alone. Quiet and unassuming, he’s careful to hide his lycanthropy, only revealing his true nature if provoked.

An Odd Formation.
A tumble of Galeb Duhr have made a home in this mountainous area. They tend to dwell in a strange formations, though they are not very common to find. The party hears a soft rumbling emanating the stones and see the glint of gemstones.


The Feast of the Fallen.
A valiant fight between some adventurers and a manticore took place on the road. Only to have everyone fall victim to their wounds. Now the land and its inhabitants are claiming what remains.

Enchanted Hot Spring.
A Water Weird is bound to guard a magical hot spring, its master long forgotten by history. It yearns to return to its own plane of existence.


Mini Adventure.
A set of three mini adventures. They include maps of the dungeon or area, along with information about NPCs and loot. They also have rumor tables if you want to lead your players to them or you can just have them stumble upon them. Each adventure also has the danger level and a small random encounter table.

Ruined Tower.
A tower reclaimed by nature leads to an underground smuggler’s cache infested with rats and spiders.

The Overgrown Temple.
An Elven temple built for Gede deep in the woods is overrun by a Mantrap living off enchanted water and any flesh it can catch.


Wisdom of the Green.
A tribe of goblins nestled deep in the woods, led by a goblin unlike any other. Their leader rules with wisdom and respect, making the tribe more than just typical raiders. Will they be friend or foe?
